Stephan Wanger of Galeria Alegria

Stephan's mission is to promote the state of Louisiana and the city of New Orleans in a unique way, that will generate interest in the state and motivate art lovers and environmentalists alike to visit the state and this great city.

He aims to bring attention to the global warming crisis through the use of recycled materials in fine art. Mardi Gras parades generate about 10,000 tons of trash distributed along the entire gulf coast – every year. Most of the trash is beads, lots and lots of beads.

What starts as a string of beads being thrown to a smiling catcher, gets worn for a couple of hours – and then goes into storage – The rest, the most unlucky beads, are hauled to a landfill.

Stephan's mission is to harness that happiness and excitement by turning these trinkets into beautiful and sustainably crafted pieces of artwork. Nothing beats the smell of brand new merchandise. A consumer based society changes its habits slowly. Stephan's personal challenge is to always make his art smell and look brand new.
